Search for the NIELIT A Level syllabus and you will find the same thin paragraph copied across a dozen websites: "A Level covers programming, databases and networking." That tells you nothing. It does not tell you how many modules there are, which ones you can skip, what the elective tracks are, or how the 1,500 marks are actually split.
This guide is the full thing. Every module code, every module name and every unit-wise mark weight below is taken from the official NIELIT document — "Information Booklet cum Syllabus of ‘A’ Level Course in Information Technology under DOEACC Scheme, Revision-V" — not from memory and not copied from another blog.
Zed-King Group of Institute, Kaithal is a NIELIT Study Centre (ACCR-O3292) under the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Government of India. The syllabus we teach in class is the one listed below.

The Thing Nobody Tells You: A1–A4 Are the O Level Modules
This is the single most useful fact in this article, and almost no website mentions it.
The first four A Level modules — A1-R5, A2-R5, A3-R5 and A4-R5 — are the same four modules as O Level M1, M2, M3 and M4. Same subjects, same content, same practical.
Two things follow from that:
If you have already passed O Level, you do not repeat A1–A4. You start directly at A5-R5. Your course drops from three semesters to two, and from 1,590 learning hours to 1,070.
If you joined A Level directly after 10+2, you can collect an O Level certificate on the way. A student registered in A Level who clears A1-R5, A2-R5, A3-R5, A4-R5 and PR-I, and submits the mini project certificate, is awarded the O Level (IT) certificate — two government qualifications from one course.
Entry route | Modules you study | Semesters | Total learning hours |
|---|---|---|---|
Direct entry (10+2 / graduate / diploma) | All 10 (A1 to A10.x) | 3 | 1,590 |
After passing O Level | 6 (A5, A6, A7, A8, A9.x, A10.x) | 2 | 1,070 |
Because A1–A4 are the O Level modules, all of our free O Level material applies to them directly — chapter-wise notes, MCQs, previous year papers and module-wise mock tests. See the O Level module-wise syllabus guide for the complete chapter list of those four, then come back here for A5 onwards.
Complete Module List — A1-R5 to A10-R5
Code | Module | Same as O Level? |
|---|---|---|
A1-R5 | Information Technology Tools and Network Basics | Yes — M1 |
A2-R5 | Web Designing and Publishing | Yes — M2 |
A3-R5 | Programming and Problem Solving through Python | Yes — M3 |
A4-R5 | Internet of Things and its Applications | Yes — M4 |
A5-R5 | Data Structure Through Object Oriented Programming Language | No — A Level only |
A6-R5 | Computer Organization and Operating System | No — A Level only |
A7-R5 | Database Technologies | No — A Level only |
A8-R5 | Systems Analysis, Design and Testing | No — A Level only |
A9.x-R5 | One elective from five specialised areas | No — A Level only |
A10.x-R5 | The matching second elective of that same area | No — A Level only |
Every theory module carries 100 marks, 48 hours of lectures and 72 hours of practical / tutorial / project work — 120 learning hours each.
A5-R5 — Data Structure Through Object Oriented Programming Language
This is the module that makes A Level feel like a real computer science course, and it is the one students most often underestimate. Note the actual language: the R5 syllabus builds this module on C++, not Java. Marks are heavily concentrated in the classes-and-objects unit and in the four data structure units.
Unit | Topic | Marks |
|---|---|---|
1 | Object Oriented Concepts | 5 |
2 | Basics of C++, classes and objects | 20 |
3 | Analysis of algorithms | 8 |
4 | Sorting and Searching | 12 |
5 | Elementary Data Structures — Arrays, Linked Lists | 15 |
6 | Stack and Queue | 15 |
7 | Trees | 15 |
8 | Graphs | 10 |
Total | 100 |
Exam tip: units 5, 6 and 7 together carry 45 of the 100 marks. If your linked lists, stacks, queues and trees are solid, you are already close to a pass before you touch graphs or algorithm analysis.
A6-R5 — Computer Organization and Operating System
Two subjects in one paper. The first half is classical computer architecture; the second half is practical Linux — and the Linux side carries more marks than the architecture side, which surprises most students.
Unit | Topic | Marks |
|---|---|---|
1 | Basic Structure of Computers | 5 |
2 | Computer Arithmetic Operations | 10 |
3 | Central Processing Unit and Instructions | 8 |
4 | Memory Organization | 8 |
5 | I/O Organization | 9 |
6 | Operating Systems Overview | 8 |
7 | Linux Basics | 16 |
8 | Process Management and Shell Script | 13 |
9 | Users, Groups and Permissions | 10 |
10 | Standard I/O and Pipes | 8 |
11 | Finding and processing files | 5 |
Total | 100 |
Exam tip: units 7 to 11 are all Linux and add up to 52 marks. Practise on an actual Linux terminal — shell scripting, permissions and pipes cannot be learned by reading alone.
A7-R5 — Database Technologies
The most job-relevant module in the whole course. Note that the R5 syllabus specifies MariaDB, and that it does not stop at SQL — NoSQL carries the same weight as MariaDB itself.
Unit | Topic | Marks |
|---|---|---|
1 | An Overview of the Database Management System | 4 |
2 | Architecture of Database System | 6 |
3 | Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) | 6 |
4 | Database Design | 14 |
5 | MariaDB | 20 |
6 | Manipulating Data with MariaDB | 20 |
7 | NoSQL Database Technologies | 20 |
8 | Selecting Right Database | 10 |
Total | 100 |
Exam tip: units 5 and 6 are 40 marks of hands-on MariaDB. Every hour at the SQL prompt counts twice here — once in this paper and again in PR-II.
A8-R5 — Systems Analysis, Design and Testing
The software engineering paper, and the one that feeds directly into your Major Project. Four of its six units carry 20 marks each, so the weight is unusually flat — there is no small unit you can drop.
Unit | Topic | Marks |
|---|---|---|
1 | Introduction | 10 |
2 | Requirement Gathering and Feasibility Analysis | 10 |
3 | Structured Analysis | 20 |
4 | Structured Design | 20 |
5 | Object-Oriented Modelling Using UML | 20 |
6 | Testing, System Implementation and Maintenance, Other Software Development Approaches | 20 |
Total | 100 |
Exam tip: DFDs, ER diagrams and UML diagrams are drawn, not written. Practise drawing them by hand under time pressure — that is what the paper asks for.
Specialised Areas — Choosing Your A9 and A10
This is where A Level stops being a general diploma and becomes a specialisation, and it is the part students most often choose blindly. You pick one area, and it fixes both of your remaining modules — A9 and A10 come as a matched pair. Your Major Project must be in that same area, and the area is printed on your certificate.
Specialised area | A9 module | A10 module |
|---|---|---|
Data / Analytics | A9.1-R5 Big Data Analytics Using Hadoop | A10.1-R5 Data Science Using Python |
Web Development | A9.2-R5 Web Application Using PHP | A10.2-R5 Full Stack Web Development Using MVC Framework |
Networking & Security | A9.3-R5 Network Management | A10.3-R5 Information Security Management |
IoT / Embedded | A9.4-R5 Internet of Things (IoT): A Practical Approach | A10.4-R5 Internet of Things (IoT) Using Raspberry Pi |
A9.5-R5 Artificial Intelligence Concepts and R Programming | A10.5-R5 Machine Learning Using Python |
Choose carefully. If you clear one module of an area and then change your mind, you must clear both modules of the new area — the cleared one does not carry over. There is also no exemption in any specialised area module, whatever your previous qualification.
After finishing all ten modules, both projects and both practicals, you may add a second specialised area later by clearing that area's two modules and submitting another major project in it.
Practical Papers and Projects
Beyond the ten theory papers, A Level has two practical examinations and two projects. Each practical is three hours and 100 marks, and each must be cleared at 50% on its own.
Code | What it covers | Marks |
|---|---|---|
PR-I | Practical based on modules A1-R5, A2-R5, A3-R5 and A4-R5 | 100 |
PR-II | Practical based on modules A5-R5, A6-R5 and A7-R5 | 100 |
PJ-I | Mini Project (40 hours) | 100 |
PJ-II | Major Project (350 hours), based on your specialised area | 200 |
The Major Project alone is 350 hours and 12 of the course's 63 credits — it is a module in its own right, not a formality. A successful project completion certificate is mandatory to qualify for A Level: you cannot finish the course without it, no matter how good your theory marks are.
This is exactly where most self-study candidates get stuck, and it is the part we support most closely at ZedKing — topic selection, guide allotment, documentation format and submission timing.
Exam Pattern, Marks and Grades
Theory exam: 3 hours, 100 marks per module.
Practical exam: 3 hours, 100 marks per paper.
Passing marks: at least 50% in each theory paper and each practical, separately. There is no aggregate that lets a strong module rescue a weak one.
Total: 10 theory papers (1,000) + 2 practicals (200) + mini project (100) + major project (200) = 1,500 marks.
Marks are converted to grades on the standard NIELIT scale:
Percentage | Grade |
|---|---|
85% and above | S |
75% – 84.99% | A |
65% – 74.99% | B |
55% – 64.99% | C |
50% – 54.99% | D |
Below 50% | F — fail |
A failed module is re-attempted in the next examination cycle. You repeat only that module, never the whole course.
Eligibility for A Level
You can register for A Level through an accredited institute on any one of these routes:
O Level (IT) passed under the DOEACC Scheme — the shortest route, and you skip A1–A4.
A government-recognised polytechnic engineering diploma after 10+2, or a graduate degree — which may be concurrent.
10+2 pass — you may pursue graduation in parallel with the A Level course.
Candidates with prior qualifications may be allowed exemption in a maximum of eight papers. No exemption is given in the specialised area modules — A9 and A10 must be cleared by everyone.
Registration is done online with NIELIT and is a pre-requisite for appearing in any A Level examination. You can be registered at only one level at a time. As a NIELIT Study Centre, we handle the registration process for our students end to end.
